External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the growing demand for reforms in the United Nations, urging countries to bring forth their ideas and advocating for text-based negotiations to make the global body more democratic. This appeal was made during a press conference following the Third Voice of Global South Summit, hosted virtually by India.
Responding to queries, Jaishankar highlighted the diverse range of specific ideas for UN reforms from different groups of countries. He stressed the necessity of reconciling these ideas to present a unified democratic choice, acknowledging the improbability of achieving perfect consensus among the nearly 190 countries worldwide. Jaishankar proposed opening the floor to all member nations, allowing each to present their suggestions for reform.
The Third Voice of Global South Summit saw participation from 123 countries, including 21 heads of state and 118 ministers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who both opened and closed the event, underscored the initiative as part of his vision of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas aur Sabka Prayas.' The Summit, held in virtual format, continued discussions on developmental challenges, priorities, and solutions for the Global South.
