United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for inclusive parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, urging the interim government to ensure representation of women, minority, and indigenous communities.
In a statement issued by Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq, Guterres welcomed efforts to organize elections and restore calm, stressing the importance of a broad-based, inclusive process.
The call comes amid a volatile political situation in Bangladesh following former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation. Protests, primarily led by students, have escalated into anti-government demonstrations. Recent clashes outside the Jamuna State Guest House in Dhaka involve Bangladesh Army personnel and minority Hindu community members.
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, interim chief advisor, has visited the Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka, assuring minorities of their safety. A significant dialogue session between representatives of the Muslim and Hindu communities was held to foster communal harmony.
