The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that India's High Commission in Dhaka and Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Khulna are working to assist the repatriation of Indian nationals amid ongoing violence in Bangladesh. The MEA is coordinating with civil aviation, immigration, land ports, and Border Security Force (BSF) authorities to ensure safe travel.
"In coordination with local authorities, the High Commission and Assistant High Commissions are facilitating safe travel to border crossing points along the India-Bangladesh International Border. The MEA is also working with civil aviation, immigration, land ports, and BSF authorities to ensure a smooth passage for our citizens," the MEA said.
The unrest in Bangladesh revolves around demands for reform in the civil service job quota system. A nationwide curfew and a mobile internet ban have been imposed to prevent disinformation, The Washington Post reported. As of now, 778 Indian students have crossed back to India via land ports, and about 200 have returned via regular flights from Dhaka and Chittagong airports.
Furthermore, the High Commission in Dhaka and Assistant High Commissions are in contact with more than 4,000 Indian students in Bangladesh, offering the required assistance. Students from Nepal and Bhutan have also received help crossing into India. Security escorts have been organized for travel by road during repatriation through select land ports. Coordination with Bangladesh's civil aviation authorities and commercial airlines is ongoing to ensure uninterrupted flight services to India from Dhaka and Chittagong, officials added.
The MEA has advised Indian nationals in Bangladesh to follow the guidelines issued by the High Commission in Dhaka, avoid local travel amid the violent protests, and minimize their movement. Helpline numbers have been set up for assistance. (ANI)
