Ten Kuki Zo legislators in Manipur have called on the judicial commission investigating ethnic violence to accelerate its probe following allegations involving an audio clip purported to feature Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
The commission, led by former Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ajai Lamba, was set up last year. The Manipur government contends that the audio clip, which recently surfaced on social media, falsely represents the Chief Minister's voice in a bid to disrupt peace initiatives.
Authorities are investigating the origin of the clip, which includes remarks about ethnic violence. In a press statement, the legislators demanded that the commission expedite its probe, and if Singh is found guilty, he should be prosecuted and barred from his office to prevent any influence on the inquiry. They also seek separate administration for the Kuki Zo community to foster lasting peace in the region.
