The Ministry of External Affairs announced on Friday that it is coordinating with Russian authorities for the early discharge of at least 50 Indian nationals from the Russian Army. This follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his recent visit to Moscow.

'Prime Minister Modi raised this matter with President Putin during his visit. The Russian side responded positively to our request, and both nations are now working for the early discharge of Indian nationals,' MEA spokesperson Jaiswal said during a press briefing.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra remarked last week that Prime Minister Modi had taken a strong stance on the issue during his meeting with President Putin. The Russian government assured immediate measures for the release of these Indian nationals. Jaiswal added that this issue was consistently raised at various levels, including at the leadership level.

Additionally, Jaiswal revealed that the Prime Minister also invited President Putin to visit India for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit in 2025. The spokesperson addressed other issues, such as the capsizing of an Indian vessel near Oman. Nine crew members, including eight Indians, were rescued by the Indian Navy, while search operations continue for the remaining crew.
