In a significant diplomatic achievement, 45 Indian nationals have been released from service in the Russian military, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Thursday. This follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in July.
Of these, 35 Indians were released immediately after the talks, with the remaining 10 being discharged prior. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that six of the released nationals returned home two days ago, with more expected soon.
The recruitment of Indian nationals in the Russian Army has been a point of contention in bilateral relations. Modi's intervention also aims to expedite the discharge of about 50 more Indians still serving. Official data reveals that nine Indians have died while serving. The Russian embassy has assured close collaboration with New Delhi for the swift identification and discharge of Indians in Russian military service.
