Jaishankar Highlights India's Historic Ties and Humanitarian Efforts in Afghanistan at SCO Summit

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar opened up about India's longstanding relationship with Afghanistan, stating that people-to-people connections form the bedrock of this bond. In an interview with Kazinform News Agency in Astana, Kazakhstan, Jaishankar elaborated on New Delhi's ongoing support to the Afghan people through humanitarian aid, including food, essential medicines, and pesticides.
"In India, we have a historical relationship with the people of Afghanistan. This people-to-people connection is our foundation," Jaishankar said, according to a Ministry of External Affairs release. He noted concerns raised during the SCO summit and added, "We are addressing these not just now, but for many years: through development, humanitarian assistance, capacity building, and activities like sports. We continue to supply medicine to Afghan hospitals."
Further highlighting India's role in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), Jaishankar referenced ancient cultural and people-to-people ties with the Central Asian region. He praised Kazakhstan for its successful chairmanship of the SCO and recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement at the New Delhi Summit, where Modi described the region as an "extended family."
Jaishankar also emphasized Kazakhstan's role in the continued growth of the SCO, noting that the organization has been on a path of significant expansion. He called for increased mindfulness about the sensitivities and priorities of all member states, adding, "Building consensus should consider the priorities of each party to add value to existing cooperation frameworks."
The 2024 SCO Summit, held in Astana, featured participation from regional leaders. Representing India, Jaishankar delivered remarks from PM Modi that underscored combating terrorism and addressing climate change as key priorities.
