Denzel Washington Joins Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator 2'

Denzel Washington is set to join Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator 2', two decades after the original film. The veteran actor talked about his excitement for the project, recalling his past collaboration with Scott on 'American Gangster'. Washington will portray Macrinus, an ambitious arms dealer, in the upcoming sequel.

Denzel Washington is officially joining the cast of Ridley Scott's highly anticipated 'Gladiator 2', as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The film picks up nearly 20 years after the original. Washington shared his thoughts on the project, emphasizing his admiration for Scott. "There are very few films left for me to make that I'm interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker, and I was tremendously inspired by Ridley," he remarked.

The actor also recalled their successful collaboration on 'American Gangster', adding, "We had a great go-round the first go-round on American Gangster, and here we are." Known for his versatile and award-winning work, Washington has been showered with accolades, including two Academy Awards, a Tony Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and an AFI Life Achievement Award. He's been in numerous acclaimed projects such as 'Mo' Better Blues', 'Philadelphia', and 'Man on Fire'.

In addition to starring, Washington has directed films like 'Antwone Fisher' and 'Fences'. Reflecting on his collaborations with the late Tony Scott, Ridley Scott's brother, Washington expressed delight at teaming up with Ridley Scott again. "Obviously, both are great filmmakers," Washington said. "They can't miss."

This renewed partnership has revitalized Washington. He praised Scott's enduring enthusiasm, stating, "He's an inspiration. We should all want to feel like that at 86." Despite not divulging his future film plans, Washington revealed his role in 'Gladiator 2' as Macrinus, a wealthy arms dealer with imperial ambitions. The film, featuring a star-studded cast including Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Joseph Quinn, is set for a November 22 release.
