Health Minister Dr. Shane Reti has announced significant enhancements to radiology services in the Wellington region, with the first of eight new digital radiography machines now operational at Wellington Regional Hospital.

“This new technology marks a significant advancement for radiology in Wellington, offering faster and higher quality x-rays,” Dr. Reti stated.

The new digital radiography machines are capable of producing sharper and more detailed x-ray images instantly, reducing the time needed to capture and review scans by about two-thirds. This efficiency allows clinicians to see more patients each day, enabling quicker diagnoses and treatment decisions.

Dr. Reti emphasized the Government's commitment to building a more efficient health system that ensures timely access to quality healthcare for all New Zealanders. He highlighted five key targets driving these improvements, including reducing wait times for first specialist assessments and planned care.

“These investments in modern, efficient technology like the new digital radiography machines are crucial to achieving our healthcare targets,” he noted.

The upgrade represents a significant improvement in radiology services at both Wellington Regional and Kenepuru Community hospitals. The rollout of these eight new machines will continue through December, alongside the refurbishment of radiology rooms to create modern, fit-for-purpose spaces for patients and staff. This follows a similar upgrade of x-ray machines and radiology rooms at Hutt Hospital.

Dr. Reti also linked this upgrade to his broader focus on improving access to diagnostic radiology across the country. Earlier this year, he announced a $30 million investment in community-referred radiology services to reduce barriers to essential diagnostic procedures like x-rays, CT scans, and ultrasounds.

“Our Government remains focused on building a health system that’s more efficient and provides New Zealanders with timely access to quality healthcare,” Dr. Reti reiterated.
