Protests demanding quick punishment for the rape and murder of a woman doctor inside a Kolkata hospital continued for the third day on Sunday, disrupting services in government hospitals across West Bengal.

Junior doctors, house staff, and post-graduate trainees at various state-run hospitals are also calling for heightened security in medical establishments.

The state government, conceding to protestors' demands, removed the Medical Superintendent and replaced him with another official, an official stated. The protesters also seek the public release of the victim's post-mortem report and CCTV footage from the incident site.

The victim, a woman PGT, was found dead on Friday, sparking protests that escalated over the weekend. Authorities confirmed the arrest of a civic volunteer in connection with the case.

Nationwide support for the protests was evident with the Federation of Resident Doctors' Association of India (FORDA) calling for a nationwide halt of elective services. The West Bengal Doctors Forum also urged the Chief Minister to form an impartial enquiry committee and enhance security measures for medical staff.

In response, the state health department canceled leaves and holidays for all senior doctors to manage the situation.
