Japan set a new record for monthly visitors in June, as official data revealed a tourism surge driven by the weak yen. The number of foreign visitors for business and leisure reached 3.14 million last month, surpassing the previous record set in March and the 3.04 million in May, according to data from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO).

Through June, Japan recorded 17.78 million travelers for the half-year period, on track to surpass the previous annual high of 31.9 million in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Visitor spending is projected to reach 8 trillion yen ($50 billion) this year, the Nikkei newspaper reported.

With the yen remaining weak, Japan's tourism sector is expected to continue its robust growth, becoming a significant contributor to the nation's economy.
