As Delhi prepares to ring in the New Year 2025, the city's police department has unveiled a robust security strategy designed to ensure safe celebrations across its bustling locales, including popular hangouts such as Hauz Khas, Connaught Place, and Lajpat Nagar.
In an interview with ANI, DCP South West Surendra Chaudhary revealed plans that include briefing local restaurant employees on safety protocols. He noted the deployment of a facial recognition system (FRS) van, in partnership with the traffic police, to help identify individuals with criminal histories. Additionally, 60 surveillance cameras have been installed to augment security, while loudspeakers will provide instructions to large crowds if needed.
Police have established 27 checkpoints, equipping officers with breath analyzers to deter and detect drunk driving, and stationed 14 Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) alongside 16 Police Control Room (PCR) vans to enhance rapid response capabilities.
According to police officials, heightened attention is on 35 main celebration venues and 15 hotspots, which will be under strict surveillance. Security personnel have been allocated to 21 bus stops and 60 motorcycle patrols, ensuring oversight of vulnerable zones and maintaining a visible police presence at eight prominent hotels. Enhanced security protocols will also be in place at Hauz Khas Village, known for its vibrant nightlife.
The police force will be out in full strength with seven Assistant Commissioners of Police, 38 Inspectors, 329 Sub-Inspectors and Assistant Sub-Inspectors, supplemented by 161 female officers. Beat patrols and vehicle checks will be routine, emphasizing immediate response. Authorities urge the public to partake in celebrations responsibly and assist officers in maintaining law and order, reporting any suspicious behaviors via the helpline number 112.
New Year's Eve remains a major event, celebrated nationally, especially in urban India. However, it is also marked by increased alcohol consumption, which can exacerbate issues like alcohol smuggling, demanding heightened vigilance.
