Hindalco Industries Ltd, a leader in metals under the Aditya Birla Group, has announced its plans to commence operations in the Meenakshi coal mine in Odisha by 2028.
This strategically important mine holds geological reserves of 285.23 million tonnes and is poised for peak production of 12 million tonnes annually. With a favorable coal-to-waste stripping ratio of less than one, it promises to be a cost-effective and sustainable energy option for Hindalco, supporting its goal of self-reliance in coal production.
The project is set to replace Hindalco's current dependence on auctioned coal, which is 40% more costly. It will secure a stable coal supply for the company's smelters, reinforcing Hindalco's status as one of the world's lowest-cost aluminum producers. Additionally, the mine is expected to generate around 16,000 jobs, enhancing local livelihoods and advancing community development.
