In a significant move towards universal healthcare, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has introduced the Ayushman Vaya Vandana Card, aimed at providing senior citizens in India with crucial healthcare benefits. Announced on Tuesday, the initiative grants free medical coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per annum to all citizens aged 70 and above.
Union Minister Prataprao Jadhav emphasized that this scheme was crafted with a deep understanding of the financial hardships faced by elderly individuals. Previously, many seniors refrained from seeking necessary treatment due to the exorbitant costs. With this new card, they can access services from major hospitals without facing monetary constraints.
Designed under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), the card extends healthcare coverage to senior citizens irrespective of their income level. The government highlights that this effort not only aligns with its commitment to universal health coverage but also ensures that Indian elders live with dignity and without health-related financial dependencies.
