The Delhi High Court on Wednesday rejected the bail plea of British national Christian Michel James in the Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland chopper scam case. Michel is the alleged middleman in the case, currently being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) over the purchase of 12 VVIP helicopters for India.

Michel's plea in a related Enforcement Directorate (ED) case remains pending, with the hearing rescheduled to November 18, 2024. The ED case involves money laundering charges linked to bribes during the helicopter deal. The case continues to receive intense scrutiny given its high-profile nature and international scope.

Led by Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma, the Delhi High Court dismissed Michel's bail plea, citing no significant change in circumstances. Michel's previous bail pleas were also denied due to the serious allegations. Arrested in Dubai after Non-Bailable Warrants were issued in 2015 and a Red Corner Notice, Michel was extradited to India on December 4, 2018.

CBI Senior Advocate DP Singh emphasized that Michel could influence witnesses and tamper with evidence if granted bail, given his high-level connections. The courts aim to ensure the accused's presence and protect the investigation's integrity. The Supreme Court had also previously denied bail, citing Michel's central role and the potential hindrance to the judicial process.

Despite concerns over his lengthy pre-trial detention, both lower and apex courts have consistently rejected Michel's bail applications.
