A methane leak sparked an explosion at a coal mine in eastern Iran, killing at least 32 people and injuring 17 others, Iranian state media reported Sunday. Another 18 miners are believed to be trapped inside.

The incident occurred in Tabas, around 540 km (335 miles) southeast of Tehran. Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene after the blast, which occurred late Saturday. Approximately 70 people were working at the mine when the explosion took place. According to state television, 18 miners are feared to be trapped in tunnels located 700 meters (2,300 feet) below the surface.

Iran's newly appointed reformist President, Masoud Pezeshkian, who is preparing for his upcoming trip to the UN General Assembly in New York, has ordered a full rescue operation and support for the affected families. He also announced an investigation into the cause of the explosion.

Known for its vast mineral resources, Iran consumes around 3.5 million tons of coal annually but produces only about 1.8 million tons, with the rest being imported for use in steel mills. The country's mining industry has a tragic history, with previous incidents causing significant loss of life due to poor safety standards and inadequate emergency services.
