Amid ongoing protests by junior doctors in Kolkata, the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, resumed hearing its suo motu case on the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
In the previous hearing on September 9, the apex court requested protesting doctors to resume duties by September 10. However, protests have continued, leading West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to agree to doctors' demands, including replacing Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal and other officials.
During the latest hearing, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal expressed concerns about live streaming of the proceedings, citing threats to advocates. CJI Chandrachud asserted that live streaming is in the public interest but assured protective measures for legal professionals. The CBI has filed a new status report, which the Court is reviewing to ensure a thorough investigation.
