Union Minister and BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar has thrown down the gauntlet to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, demanding her resignation over the Kolkata rape case. Majumdar announced he would also step down if Banerjee resigned. Speaking to ANI, he said, "We told her (Mamata Banerjee) that I am a Central Minister from this state. There has been a rape in this state; if you have the courage, then resign, and I will resign too."

His bold statement follows Banerjee's call on Tuesday for the resignations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other state chief ministers where incidents of rape and sexual abuse have been reported. Majumdar further claimed that the Trinamool Congress is attempting to shield former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, who faces numerous allegations connected to the rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata.

"Mamata Banerjee is protecting Sandip Ghosh, and he has been appointed to one position after another. When he was removed from the position of Principal at RG Kar, he was sent to National Medical College. The students at National Medical College did not let him enter, so he was then appointed as Officer on Special Duty at the Health Department. The party is trying to protect the person against whom most allegations have been leveled," Majumdar told ANI. The shocking rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor in Kolkata have sparked widespread protests in West Bengal and nationwide.

Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been remanded to 8-day police custody. His next court hearing is scheduled for September 10. The Central Bureau of Investigation's Anti-Corruption Branch arrested Ghosh and three others for alleged corruption and financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday.

The West Bengal Health Department has since suspended Ghosh. The female doctor's body was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. (ANI)
