Massive protests erupted in Himachal Pradesh over the alleged illegal construction of the Sanjauli Mosque, intensifying political confrontations between BJP and Congress leaders. On Friday, opposition leader Jai Ram Thakur, from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), called for immediate action against the mosque's construction.

Thakur emphasized the government's responsibility for maintaining law and order, urging swift action if the building is unauthorized. 'This is a massive structure, and action should be taken immediately. If the action is not taken, public anger will not subside,' he stated.

He also demanded verification of recent settlers, highlighting the need to understand the origins of those who have recently moved to Himachal Pradesh. 'Verification should be conducted to determine who they are and where they came from,' Thakur added.

Earlier, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu appealed for communal peace amidst the mosque controversy, urging adherence to the law. 'India is a secular country where all religions are respected. We should not be driven by emotions and must work according to the law,' said Sukhu, who noted that the situation is being closely monitored.

Sukhu expressed his contentment with the peaceful nature of the protests and reiterated that the issue's legality would be determined by the court. 'I am pleased no violence has occurred. The court will decide on the legality of the construction,' he stated.

On Thursday, a significant number of people protested outside the Sanjauli Mosque in Shimla, demanding its demolition if deemed illegal. The Municipal Commissioner's court is set to hear the case on September 7, which will determine the mosque's fate.

The Sanjauli Mosque issue has fueled ongoing political debate in Himachal Pradesh, with BJP and Congress leaders accusing each other on the assembly floor.
