Transport Minister Simeon Brown has announced a historic $8.4 billion investment in Auckland’s transport infrastructure through the 2024-27 National Land Transport Programme (NLTP). This unprecedented funding aims to support the region’s economic growth, reduce travel times, and enhance public transport options.

“Aucklanders have clearly rejected the previous government’s transport policies, which led to delays, unfulfilled projects, reduced speed limits, and an overabundance of speed bumps,” said Minister Brown. “We are committed to reversing these issues with record investment in transport infrastructure that will enhance travel efficiency and safety.”

The NLTP will significantly improve Auckland's transport network, addressing congestion and boosting connectivity. Key projects include:

City Rail Link: Completion of this project by 2026 will double the capacity of Auckland’s rail network.

Roads of National Significance (RoNS): Prioritizing improvements on SH1 from Warkworth to Wellsford, Mill Road, and the East-West Link, with plans for a North West Alternative State Highway (SH16) in the 2027-30 period.

Roads of Regional Significance: Advancing upgrades on SH1 from Papakura to Drury, Penlink, and starting work on the Waihoehoe Road upgrade.

Additional Connections: Continued planning for a new Waitematā Harbour connection.

Reeves Road Flyover and Eastern Busway: Completing the flyover and further developing the Eastern Busway.

Local Roads: Investing in dynamic lanes, reversing previous speed limit reductions, and funding Auckland Transport to remove speed bumps on high-traffic roads.

Road Maintenance: Addressing potholes and resealing 393 kilometers of state highways to prevent their formation.

Northwest Rapid Transport Corridor: Continued planning and investment for this critical corridor.

Minister Brown emphasized the government's dedication to delivering reliable and efficient public transport. “Over the next three years, we are investing over $3.7 billion to enhance public transport services in Auckland and reduce congestion. This includes advancing the SH16 Northwest Rapid Transport corridor from Brigham Creek to the city center.”

The comprehensive investment plan is designed to stimulate economic growth, reduce congestion, and facilitate new housing developments. “Our focus is on improving transport infrastructure to support Auckland’s economic growth and productivity. When Auckland thrives, New Zealand thrives,” Minister Brown concluded.

The $8.4 billion investment demonstrates the government's commitment to transforming Auckland's transport network and ensuring future prosperity for the region.
