In response to a Supreme Court directive, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has taken charge of security at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This move aims to beef up security in the wake of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the institution, which has sparked widespread protests.
On August 21, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) formally communicated with the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, urging the deployment of CISF personnel to the beleaguered medical college. The directive came amid rising demonstrations following the tragic incident. Deputy Inspector General of CISF, K Pratap Singh, confirmed the deployment, stating personnel would be present in all shifts to ensure heightened security.
West Bengal is currently navigating a period of significant unrest, with various groups airing their grievances. The intervention by CISF is anticipated to stabilize the situation, bolstering security efforts, and decreasing potential threats to public peace.
