Brazilian Supreme Court's Ultimatum to Elon Musk Over X's Operations
Brazil's Supreme Court has issued an ultimatum to X, formerly Twitter, demanding the appointment of an in-country legal representative within 24 hours. The order, issued by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, escalates ongoing tensions over free speech and misinformation. Failure to comply may lead to the suspension of X's operations in Brazil.
In an unprecedented move, Brazil's Supreme Court has threatened to cease operations of X, formerly known as Twitter, within the country unless billionaire owner Elon Musk appoints a local legal representative within 24 hours.
This directive, issued by Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Wednesday, marks a significant escalation in the ongoing clash between Musk's social media platform and Brazilian authorities. Earlier this month, X announced its decision to withdraw its remaining staff in Brazil, attributing the action to legal pressures from de Moraes.
The Supreme Court has warned that non-compliance could result in the suspension of X's activities in Brazil. The controversy centers around issues of free speech, far-right accounts, and misinformation, with de Moraes asserting his measures are essential to safeguard democracy, though critics argue he is stifling free expression.
