In a significant announcement, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar declared that an increase in water tariffs is inevitable. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has not raised tariffs in over a decade and is facing severe financial strain.

Shivakumar emphasized the necessity of the hike, warning that without it, the BWSSB risks operational collapse. This would severely impact its ability to pay employees and manage essential costs such as electricity. The exact amount and affected segments of the hike are yet to be determined.

To curb rising electricity costs, Shivakumar revealed plans for a captive power generation facility to save money across multiple departments. He firmly rejected privatization of BWSSB, citing negative past experiences and lack of substantial benefits. Additionally, he announced an increase in water supply and efforts to recharge groundwater and address borewell issues.
