West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday paid a surprise visit to the protest site of junior doctors, assuring them that their demands would be addressed while urging them to come for talks. However, the proposed meeting failed as the protesters claimed they were asked to leave after waiting for three hours at the gates of the CM's residence.
The protesters had refused to enter Banerjee's residence due to the government's rejection of their request for a live telecast. Banerjee later came out to appeal to the doctors to join the talks and assured them that a signed copy of the meeting minutes would be provided.
Meanwhile, the CBI added charges of evidence tampering against former RG Kar hospital principal Sandip Ghosh in a separate rape-murder case. Banerjee emphasized the importance of completing the investigation swiftly and took a strong stance against using heavy-handed measures with the protesting doctors, drawing a contrast with the BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh.
