Two passenger trains collided in Egypt's Nile Delta on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of at least two individuals, according to authorities.

The collision occurred in Zagazig, the capital of Sharqiya province, as confirmed by the country's railway authority. Egypt's Health Ministry stated that the incident also left at least 29 people injured.

Train derailments and crashes are frequent in Egypt due to an aging railway system and mismanagement. The government has recently announced initiatives to improve the railway network. In 2018, President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi remarked that approximately 250 billion Egyptian pounds, or USD 8.13 billion, would be essential for a significant overhaul. Footage from the crash site showed a crumpled train car surrounded by crowds, with men attempting to rescue the injured through windows.

Just last month, another train accident in Alexandria resulted in two fatalities when a train collided with a truck crossing the tracks.
