A fire broke out in the Russian port of Kavkaz in southern Krasnodar region on Thursday following a Ukrainian attack on a ferry loaded with fuel tanks, according to local authorities.

The ferry, carrying 30 fuel tanks, suffered significant damage and eventually sank, as confirmed by Temryuk district head Fyodor Babenkov. Potential casualties are currently being assessed, with Ukraine yet to comment on the incident.

A local task force dispatched a special train to douse the blaze, involving more than 100 personnel in the effort. Multiple Russian media outlets shared images and videos appearing to show the fire and black smoke billowing from the vessel. Reuters, however, could not immediately verify the media content.

The port of Kavkaz, one of Russia's major hubs on the Black Sea, plays a crucial role in exporting goods and supplying fuel to Crimea.
