Delhi Minister Atishi has urgently called on Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to address the severe waterlogging at the Zakhira underpass in the capital city. In a letter addressed to Vaishnaw, Atishi pointed out that the main cause of the flooding is due to non-channelization of water from Indian Railways' land.
According to the minister, the absence of a proper railway culvert has led to water, debris, and garbage from the surrounding areas flowing into the underpass. Despite an agreement for cost-sharing between the Delhi Government and Railways for constructing a culvert, no action has been taken, even after the Delhi Government deposited Rs 2.70 crore on July 18, 2023, said Atishi. The recent moderate rainfall has exacerbated the situation, resulting in two feet of water accumulating at the underpass, necessitating traffic stoppages and erecting barricades.
Criticizing the railways for inaction, Atishi highlighted the adverse impact on Delhiites and urged the Railway Minister to find an immediate solution to prevent water from railway lands causing further waterlogging issues. The situation has drawn criticism from the Delhi BJP Unit against the AAP government.
