The Manipur government has lifted the temporary ban on broadband internet services in five valley districts on a conditional basis, officials announced on Friday. However, the suspension of mobile internet services will remain enforced.
The five-day ban, imposed on September 10, followed student protests demanding the removal of the Director General of Police and security advisor, citing their failure to manage militant attacks.
A notification from Commissioner (Home) N. Ashok Kumar stated, 'The state government has decided to lift the suspension for broadband service (ILL and FTTH) conditionally, subject to terms and conditions.' The notification specified that connections would be through static IP and prohibited other connections. It also banned wifi/hotspots and mandated blocking social media and VPNs at the local level. Concerns over disinformation and rumours spreading through mobile internet led to the continued suspension of mobile data services. Protests earlier resulted in over 80 injuries, and a recent security operation in Churachandpur district recovered weapons, further heightening tensions.
