In a major political turn, a coalition of Muslim leaders, including Islamic scholars, clerics, and intellectuals, has called upon secular political parties to clarify their positions regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, currently under review by the Joint Parliamentary Committee. This demand emerges just before critical state elections in Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand – the first significant electoral test following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Last week, the central government introduced the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, officially titled the United Waqf Act Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, or UMEED. While the Muslim community appreciated Shiv Sena (UBT) head Uddhav Thackeray's critique of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government over the bill, they remain concerned about its timing and potential impacts.

During a meeting at Islam Gymkhana, organized by Tareek-e-Awkaf and All India Ulema Board, Muslim leaders expressed alarm over the bill, claiming it would significantly curtail the powers of Waqf Boards. Leading figures such as Shabbir Ansari, Yusuf Abrahani, and other prominent community members unanimously opposed the bill, arguing it represents undue political interference and discrimination as per Articles 14, 15, 25, and 30 of the Indian Constitution.
