CBI Psychologist Joins Investigation into Kolkata Doctor's Tragic Death

A CBI psychologist has joined the investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, sparking nationwide protests and demands for justice. The Indian Medical Association has announced a 24-hour nationwide strike in response to the incident.

A psychologist from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrived in Kolkata to assist in the probe into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, sources reveal. "A psychologist who is a part of the CBI team has also reached Kolkata. He will assist the CBI team in the investigation," said CBI sources.

The psychologist is expected to examine both the accused and suspects as part of the ongoing investigation. The heinous crime has ignited nationwide outrage, drawing responses from various sectors.

West Bengal Congress workers, along with members of the LGBTQIA+ community, held rallies and protests demanding justice for the victim. Junior doctors and medical students also protested at Mangalagiri AIIMS Hospital and Delhi's Lady Hardinge Medical College. ABVP workers engaged in protests against the TMC government in West Bengal.

In a significant move, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) announced a nationwide withdrawal of services by modern medicine doctors from 6 am on Saturday, August 17, to 6 am Sunday, August 18. IMA National President Dr. Asokan emphasized the need for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention in the case, stating that they will be writing to him.

The nationwide doctor's strike entails a 24-hour suspension of services across sectors and locations, maintaining only emergency and casualty operations. The IMA declared that OPDs and elective surgeries will be halted from 6 am on Saturday till 6 am on Sunday, August 18, 2024.

On August 14, a mob of 5,000 to 7,000 individuals attacked RG Kar Hospital, assaulting protesting doctors and medical students and trying to ransack the facility. Security officials had to disperse the crowd. By August 16, Kolkata police had arrested 19 individuals allegedly involved in the mob violence.

The tragic discovery of the postgraduate trainee doctor's body on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College's seminar hall has led to nationwide protests by the medical community. (ANI)
