Mexican President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday appointed Emilia Esther Calleja as the new head of state power firm Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE), making her the first woman to ever hold the position.

Calleja, who has served in various roles within CFE for over 20 years, was present alongside Sheinbaum during the announcement. The president-elect's cabinet, which will take office on October 1, has predominantly been composed of technocrats.

In her new role, Calleja aims to continue working in line with the previous government's efforts to increase state control over Mexico's energy sector. Meanwhile, the president-elect has yet to name a leader for the heavily indebted state oil firm Pemex.
