Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to the freedom fighters who participated in the 'Quit India Movement' led by Mahatma Gandhi. Emphasizing the historical significance, PM Modi highlighted the movement's pivotal role in India's pursuit of independence from colonial rule.
"Homage to all those who took part in the Quit India Movement under Bapu's leadership. It was truly a watershed moment in our freedom struggle," Modi expressed in a post on X.
He also conveyed his thoughts via a video message, saying, "Today, India is saying in one voice: Corruption Quit India. Dynasty Quit India. Appeasement Quit India." The Quit India Movement, launched on August 9, 1942, called for an end to British rule, marking a crucial phase in India's independence saga, according to the Ministry of Culture.
The Ministry further stated that the 1942 movement significantly conveyed to the British the impracticality of continuing their governance in India, pushing them to consider their exit. Gandhi's appeal for a non-violent mass protest urged for an "orderly British withdrawal" and inspired many through his impassioned speeches, asserting that every Indian desiring freedom must guide themselves in this quest.
On this day in 1942, Gandhi's iconic 'Do or Die' call galvanized Indians to oust the British. The movement started at Gawalia Tank in Mumbai and is commemorated every year as August Kranti Day.
