In a significant crackdown on gold smuggling, Customs and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officers have seized a staggering 847 kg of gold worth Rs 544 crore at various airports during the first three months of the current fiscal year, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman revealed on Tuesday.

Replying to a query in the Rajya Sabha, Sitharaman provided detailed accounts of gold seizures from FY 2021-22 to FY 2024-25. She cited that in the fiscal year up to June 2024, authorities confiscated 847.43 kg of gold across 1,282 cases, amounting to Rs 543.61 crore in value.

Sitharaman emphasized the proactive measures taken by Customs field formations and DRI to thwart smuggling efforts, including constant surveillance, intelligence-based operations, and advanced passenger information systems.
