The National Water and Sanitation Youth Indaba has spotlighted the pivotal role of young professionals in advancing research and innovation within the water sector. Hosted by the Department of Water and Sanitation alongside Lepelle Northern Water, the Indaba took place in Polokwane, Limpopo, from July 22-25, 2024, under the theme: “Actively Embracing the Socio-Economic Gains of Our Democracy.”

Youth Engagement in Research and Innovation:

Dr. Nndweleni Mphephu, Chairperson of Lepelle Northern Water, emphasized the critical need for young professionals to engage in research to tackle the water sector's challenges, which are increasingly intensified by climate change. He urged attendees to apply their innovative minds to develop sustainable solutions for the sector.

Petunia Ramunenyiwa, Chief Director for Intergovernmental Relations, Sector Transformation, and Provincial Governance at the Department of Water and Sanitation, reiterated the department's dedication to including young professionals. She described the Indaba as more than just a forum for discussion but a vital platform for knowledge exchange and technical expertise aimed at enhancing sector governance and transformation.

Discussions and Activities:

The Indaba featured a range of discussions aimed at improving sector governance and transformation. Topics included:

National water and sanitation issues and government priorities.

Providing youth with information, opportunities, and technical resources.

Encouraging community involvement and establishing partnerships with private sector, civil society, and other stakeholders.

Participants had the opportunity to explore real-world applications through guided tours of the Ebenezer Water Treatment Plant and the University of Limpopo’s advanced water laboratory. The Ebenezer Plant treats water from the Ebenezer Dam and supplies it to Polokwane Local Municipality and surrounding areas. The university's water laboratory, renowned for its advanced technologies, uses methods such as inductively coupled plasma for heavy metal analysis.

The four-day event was attended by over 400 individuals from various backgrounds, including unemployed individuals, professionals, entrepreneurs, and civil society organizations. Discussions covered:
