After the outbreak of the Nipah virus in Malappuram, Kerala Health Minister Veena George declared that the state is fully prepared to tackle the crisis. She stated that 214 individuals are on the primary contact list, with 60 identified as high-risk, all of whom should be isolated.

The Health Minister reported that preventive measures have been intensified following the confirmation of Nipah in Malappuram. Based on Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) formed under government orders, 25 committees have been established. Contact tracing began on Saturday morning. George disclosed that 30 isolation rooms have been set up in Manjeri Medical College, with additional wards arranged in Kozhikode Medical College. A route map will be published shortly.

George urged those who were present at relevant locations to contact the control room and stated that all high-risk contacts would undergo sample testing. She added that a 24-hour Nipah control room has been activated and emphasized that those showing symptoms such as fever, headache, cough, and breathing problems should seek assistance. She highlighted the importance of public mask-wearing and warned against unnecessary hospital visits.

The Health Minister informed that a 14-year-old boy had tested positive for Nipah virus, as confirmed by NIV Pune. Efforts are underway to prepare a contact list for the boy, with high-risk contacts being tested. A meeting with district officials is scheduled to discuss restrictions within a 3 km radius of the outbreak's epicenter.

George chaired a high-level meeting in Malappuram to discuss preventative measures and ensure public safety. Attendees included top officials from the health sector and district authorities. Samples from suspected cases have been sent to a virology lab in Pune for further analysis.
