Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Saturday visited the Sardar Sarovar Project to gather information about the drainage initiatives in Nalakantha village, Viramgam taluka in Ahmedabad district.

The project, valued at Rs 1400 crore, aims to boost irrigation across Sanand, Viramgam, and Bawala talukas, covering areas like Nalkantha and Kowada within the Fatewadi Canal and Narmada project command area.

Parthiv Vyas, Director of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd, shared that Rs 377.65 crore work has commenced in the first phase, with a second phase set to start utilizing Rs 1020 crore. Union Home Minister Amit Shah mandated planning in 2021 to include 38 additional villages.

A 2022 directive from the Chief Minister and the Narmada Water Resources Department expanded the project to include 18 more villages along the Fatewadi Canal not originally covered. The Sardar Sarovar Project, one of India's largest water resources initiatives, spans four states with a spillway capacity ranking third in the world.
