The editorial sphere of the Los Angeles Times is facing turbulence following the resignation of editorial editor Mariel Garza. Her exit comes in the wake of the newspaper's owner's decision to prevent endorsing Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidential race.
Patrick Soon-Shiong, the LA Times' owner, directed the editorial board towards providing a factual comparison between Harris and former President Donald Trump instead of voicing support. However, Garza argued the silence was inappropriate during such critical times.
While Soon-Shiong stated the board's choice to remain neutral was accepted, the LA Times Guild expressed concern over the owner's intervention, indicating ongoing internal debates regarding editorial independence and responsibility.
