The Maharashtra government on Monday approved a proposal to rename Pune airport as Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj Pune International Airport.

The decision emerged during a state cabinet meeting, with the proposal's next step being submission to the central government for further processing.

The renaming initiative was led by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, who represents Pune. Expressing gratitude, Mohol also acknowledged the support of the ruling Mahayuti alliance government, including the BJP, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party.

Sant Tukaram, born in Pune district, was a significant figure during the Bhakti movement, noted for his spiritual poetry and sainthood.
