The opposition Congress has called for a judicial investigation into the allegations of an Army officer's fiancée being assaulted in police custody. A delegation led by former women's wing president Sashmita Behera submitted a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu, which was also addressed to Governor Raghubar Das.
While the state BJP government has already ordered an inquiry led by retired high court judge Chittaranjan Das, the Congress contends that the police conduct was 'disgraceful' and tarnished the state's reputation. They further stated that, if the police could assault the fiancée of a high-ranking army officer, the safety of ordinary women in Odisha is in jeopardy.
The Congress is urging a judicial inquiry led by a sitting Supreme Court judge to ensure justice. Coinciding with these demands, the All India Democratic Women's Association announced state-wide protests for Tuesday, calling for the arrest of the police officers involved.
