Myanmar Reels Under Typhoon Yagi's Devastation
Typhoon Yagi, combined with monsoon rains, has caused significant devastation in Myanmar. The disaster has resulted in over 380 deaths and left 89 missing. The military and other personnel are engaged in relief efforts, but challenges persist due to ongoing civil conflict and communication disruptions. Urgent aid is needed.
More than 380 people are confirmed dead and 89 are missing in Myanmar after Typhoon Yagi, compounded by monsoon rains, triggered floods and landslides in the military-run country. State-run media reported the toll was higher than the combined fatalities across other Southeast Asian nations.
Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, Myanmar's military leader, disclosed during a donation ceremony that nearly 150,000 people were impacted by the floods. Relief efforts are hindered by communication challenges in the conflict-ridden nation, which has been embroiled in civil war since 2021.
State media outlet Global New Light of Myanmar cited widespread participation from military, police, and fire brigade personnel in cleanup and reconstruction efforts. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimated nearly 887,000 people were affected, stressing an urgent need for basic supplies.
