A 24-year-old woman student of Visva Bharati University, originally from Uttar Pradesh, has reportedly died by suicide, an official disclosed on Friday. The student, Anamika Singh, was suspected of consuming poison in her hostel room.

Singh, a third-year student at the Institute of Design and Craft, succumbed at a local hospital after being rushed there on Thursday night. Her death triggered protests from fellow students who expressed concerns over the police investigation.

Incident comparisons were made by the protesting students to the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital case in Kolkata, where a medico was raped and murdered, invoking fears of evidence tampering. Debamita Bandyopadhyay, one of the protesters, questioned the police's entry into the hostel without university officials.

Registrar Ashok Mahato stated that the delay in the arrival of university officials to the hostel was due to their presence at the hospital. Additional Superintendent of Police, Rana Mukherjee, assured that the hostel room was sealed promptly to preserve evidence.

The autopsy was conducted by an expert board, and the deceased's mother expressed suspicions of external pressure compelling her daughter to take her life, despite her daughter not mentioning any such issues.
