The navies of India and France conducted a large-scale maritime exercise in the Mediterranean Sea, underscoring their shared strategic interests.
Indian naval ship Tabar and surveillance aircraft P-8I featured in the 22nd Varuna exercise, held from September 2 to 4, according to the Indian Navy.
The French Navy was represented by the frontline ship FS Provence, submarine Suffren, fighters MB339, and helicopters NH90 and Dauphin. The exercise included advanced tactical maneuvers, anti-submarine warfare, air defense drills, and live weapon firings.
Initiated in 2001, Varuna serves as the cornerstone of India-France naval relations, evolving over the years to enhance interoperability. The Indian Navy stated that the 22nd edition signifies its outreach and ongoing commitment to sustained operations beyond the Indian Ocean.
The exercise demonstrates the growing commitment of both navies to fostering collaboration and exchanging best practices.
