The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has banned idol immersion in the Yamuna and other water bodies, imposing a fine of Rs 50,000 on violators ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi and Durga Pooja festivals.

The DPCC order, issued Wednesday, tasks local civil bodies with creating temporary immersion sites or artificial ponds near residential areas.

Following directives from the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) in 2019 and 2021, the DPCC specifies that idol immersion in Ganga and its tributaries is prohibited, with further fines imposed for non-compliance. The Delhi Police and municipal bodies will enforce these guidelines and target illegal idol-making operations.

DPCC also directed officials to monitor vehicles carrying prohibited idols. Violators face fines ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,00,000 for continued non-compliance. The DPCC encourages the use of eco-friendly idols, strictly prohibiting Plaster of Paris (POP) idols in water bodies.

The public is advised to use designated immersion sites and promote the use of temporary ponds. Decanted water should be reused for gardening, and biodegradable materials composted. The DPCC will conduct water quality assessments to ensure environmental compliance. Awareness campaigns will inform the public about the benefits of eco-friendly idols. Idol immersion has led to significant pollution, with toxic chemicals harming aquatic life and potential human health hazards.
