A special task force of nine shooters has been dispatched to Bahraich forest to either capture or shoot a man-eating wolf following orders from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, an officer announced on Wednesday.

According to Bahraich's Divisional Forest Officer, Ajit Pratap Singh, the team comprises six members from the forest department and three from the police. The operation has been divided into three primary sections, with an additional reserve team. Each section is equipped with three shooters. The goal is to identify and either transfer the wolf to a zoo or neutralize it.

'The wolf will not be released back into the forest,' Singh stated. He clarified that the decision to capture or shoot the wolf would depend on the situation upon sighting. The priority is to tranquilize and capture the animal, but shooting it is also an option if necessary. The wolf has been responsible for killing eight people and injuring 36 since the attacks began in March, with a notable increase since July 17.
