Union Minister Suresh Gopi's remarks on Tuesday accusing the media of misleading public perception about the film industry regarding the recent allegations of sexual harassment against actors and directors snowballed into a controversy with the state BJP leadership disagreeing with his stand.

Asked about the allegations against actor and CPI(M) MLA M Mukesh, Gopi said the issue was before the court, which would make a decision. He criticized the media for making people fight for its own gains, emphasizing that only the court can decide on the allegations.

Following these comments, state BJP president K Surendran stated that while Gopi, as an actor and minister, was entitled to his opinion, the party's stance is that Mukesh should resign.

When confronted by reporters about Surendran's statement, Gopi reacted angrily and pushed some reporters away, saying it was his right to go his way. He subsequently left without answering further questions.

Earlier in the day, Gopi described the allegations as 'food' for the media and accused it of trying to destroy the cinema industry for profit. His remarks came a day after Yuva Morcha organized a march towards Mukesh's residence in Kollam.

The publication of the Justice K Hema Committee report on harassment in the Malayalam film industry has led to numerous complaints against various actors and directors, and the government has announced a seven-member special investigation team to probe these allegations.
