Over the weekend, Telegram CEO and founder Pavel Durov was arrested in Paris. Durov, originally from Russia but holding multiple citizenships, faces accusations that his platform is used for criminal activities such as drug trafficking and distribution of child sexual abuse materials. He was detained at Paris-Le Bourget Airport after arriving from Azerbaijan.
Telegram stated in a public message that the company complies with EU laws and their content moderation practices are constantly improving. Despite the platform's widespread usage, criticisms point to its perceived lack of security compared to other messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal.
Support for Durov is emerging from various quarters, including from notable figures such as Elon Musk. Meanwhile, Russian officials have called the arrest politically motivated. As the investigation continues, Durov remains in custody with potential charges still pending.
