Eight persons tragically drowned while bathing in the Meshwo river in Gujarat's Gandhinagar district on Friday evening, authorities confirmed.
The victims were residents of Vasna Sogthi village in Dehgam taluka. The incident occurred near the village, according to Sub Divisional Magistrate B B Modiya, who led the search and rescue operation.
Villagers who had gone to immerse Ganesh idols in the river discovered the drowning and alerted authorities. Police and fire brigade teams rushed to the site and recovered eight bodies from the river. One initially missing person was later found safe, leading to the operation being called off.
Local authorities believe the victims likely misjudged the river's depth, exacerbated by recent water level changes due to an under-construction check dam. Union Home Minister Amit Shah offered his condolences to the grieving families, expressing his sadness over the tragic event on social media.
