Activist Urges Honduran President Castro to Resign Amid Drug Trafficking Allegations
Gabriela Castellanos, an anti-corruption activist, has called for the resignation of Honduran President Xiomara Castro after a video surfaced showing her brother-in-law allegedly negotiating campaign donations with drug traffickers. The incident follows Castro's controversial suspension of an extradition treaty with the U.S., sparking concerns over rule and law enforcement in Honduras.
Gabriela Castellanos, head of the National Anti-Corruption Council, has demanded the resignation of Honduran President Xiomara Castro. The call follows a leaked video purportedly showing Castro's brother-in-law, Carlos Zelaya, negotiating campaign donations with drug traffickers over a decade ago.
The video release comes just a week after President Castro ordered an end to an extradition treaty with the United States, provoking criticism from various quarters. Castellanos argued that the President's continuation in office would undermine the rule of law and security in Honduras.
Castro's office has yet to respond to the allegations. Meanwhile, Zelaya admitted to meeting with traffickers but denied knowing their identity at the time or receiving any funds. The situation has raised fresh concerns about corruption and governance in the Central American nation.
