Netflix has unveiled the trailer for 'Emilia Perez', a musical drama directed by Jacques Audiard that recently won accolades at the Cannes Film Festival. The film features an ensemble cast including Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, and Karla Sofia Gascon, with its sights set on becoming a major Oscar contender this fall.

'Emilia Perez' made headlines at Cannes, winning the jury prize and best actress award for its leading quartet -- Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, Karla Sofia Gascon, and Adriana Paz. According to Netflix, the film delves into the lives of four women in Mexico on their quests for happiness, focusing on Emilia, a ruthless cartel leader played by Gascon. With the help of a neglected lawyer, Rita (Saldana), Emilia fakes her own death to live authentically and undergo gender reassignment surgery.

The supporting cast includes Edgar Ramirez, with Audiard's notable vision bringing the story to life. Variety critic Peter Debruge described the film as an 'exhilarating Spanish-language (half-sung) portrait of a former cartel boss's life-changing transformation'. Debruge praised the performance of Gascon and Audiard's choice to integrate Gascon's personal experiences, lending authenticity to the role.

Following its successful run at Cannes, Netflix acquired 'Emilia Perez' and plans a limited theatrical release on November 1, before making it available for streaming on November 13.
