Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly joined a candlelight protest in Kolkata on Wednesday, seeking justice for a doctor allegedly raped and murdered inside a state-run hospital earlier this month.

Alongside him were his wife, Odissi dancer Dona Ganguly, and daughter Sana. The rally took place in the Behala area where the family resides. Ganguly was seen lighting candles at the event, although he did not speak to the media.

'We are protesting against the rape. It's not only West Bengal. Every day we get news that someone or the other from somewhere is getting raped and that is not good news. We need a safe society for every individual,' said Dona Ganguly. Her daughter Sana emphasized, 'In our society, we all are equal. The protests must go on. The victim must get justice.'

Despite initially planning to join a rally organized by city sportspersons, Ganguly was unable to participate due to lack of administrative permission. The body of the post-graduate trainee doctor was found at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, leading to the arrest of a civic volunteer. The Calcutta High Court has since transferred the investigation to the CBI.
